Landscaping Contracts Manager - Derbyshire

Salary: £28,840 to £30,437

The Company:

My client is a small charity with big ideas. They have been protecting wildlife and wild spaces in Derbyshire for over 60 years. They work together with communities, local authorities, businesses, landowners and organisations, supporting them to play their part in Nature's Recovery. They provide a range of professional services - from species surveying and land management plans through their Creative Ecological Service department, to their planning team who provide advice to councils, architects and developers, right through to individual homeowners.

The Role:

In this role, you will be responsible for coordinating and delivering practical contracts across the county, that have a strong emphasis on nature-based solutions and sympathetic management for sites and landscapes. Knowledge of health and safety compliance requirements and experience undertaking site and habitat management is essential.

Building relationships internally and externally will also be an important element of this role. As well as leading a team of Living Landscape Assistants, you will also be required to work with and lead sub-contractors and volunteer groups. In this role, you will also be responsible for meeting with and providing quotations for a broad range of clients and land owners to secure new and maintain existing contracts and relationships.

The Trust is trialling a 9-day fortnight working pattern from 1st April - 30th September which means full-time staff work 74 hours over 9 days and have every other Friday off work.

Role Responsibilities:

- Inspire their clients to help them to achieve their vision
- Seek new partnerships and opportunities to grow their client base
- Drive the development of viable contracting business
- Deliver and manage practical land-management contracts, ensuring work is delivered safely and to a high standard.
- Competence and certification for a range of equipment/machinery such as tractors, chainsaws, chipper and pedestrian mowers
- Lead the growth and development of the contracts team.
- Oversee the day to day running of the contracts team and the associated projects.
- Inspire and develop a positive culture of health & safety across all activities.
- Provide written and verbal feedback on project progress to clients and the Consultancy Development Manager.
- Manage the Contracts team budget.
- Prepare cost estimates and written quotations for clients.
- Act as an ambassador for the Trust and inspire the people of Derbyshire about wildlife by sharing knowledge and experience.
- Use specialist skills and experience alongside other colleagues to ensure the integrated delivery of the Trust's strategic objectives and priorities.
- Ensure a high level of professionalism in all dealings with clients and the public.
- Comply with all policies and procedures as well as any H&S, legal or contractual obligations.
- Work closely with the Consultancy Development Manager to plan and monitor budgets, meeting the requirement of clients, funding bodies, the Trust and partners.
- Use every opportunity, commensurate with other duties, to promote membership of the Trust.
- Carry out any other reasonable duties commensurate with the level of responsibility of the post, as requested by line manager.

Essential Skills & Requirements:

- Level 2 Functional skills (GCSE) or equivalent, in English and Maths.
- Full UK driving licence
- Undertaking practical land-management and conservation work to a high standard
- Preparing work estimates, working to a budget and maintaining up-to-date financial records
- Application of Health and Safety at Work regulations
- Working with a range of stakeholders, including clients, volunteers and community groups
- Competence and certification for a range of equipment/ machinery such as tractors, chainsaws, chipper and pedestrian mowers
- Project Management experience, including preparing and managing work programmes
- Biological identification/survey/monitoring habitat/species management expertise
- Line management of staff or providing support or supervision of other staff
- Knowledge of a broad range of practical land and habitat management techniques
- Knowledge of the ecology and natural history of the British Isles
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing
- Organise work and prioritise changing demands
- Ability to manage staff, budgets and activities
- Use a variety of software computer software including Microsoft Office
- A commitment to working with others to identify solutions to problems
- Adaptable to changing demands and priorities
- Some core tasks will require a level of physical fitness which enables the post holder to walk across difficult terrain, including land which may be wet, rough, uneven and/or steep, sometimes carrying heavy equipment
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
